Djibouti

Urban Heritage Conservation Study.

In the frame of the Social Development & Public Works Project funded by World Bank, the Government of Djibouti intends to proceed with the rehabilitation of its urban and architectural heritage, particularly the capital city’s historic centre. This is a homogeneous ensemble of residential and commercial buildings in eclectic colonial style, dating back to late 19th and early 20th century.
Through detailed reconnaissance surveys and the establishment of a GIS for planning purposes, the study aims at better understanding the urban patterns that have governed the city development since its foundation in 1888.
Fiscal, legal and financial measures geared towards the protection and conservation of this rich architectural heritage are being identified, and promotional activities launched to increase public awareness of the city’s cultural heritage.
