The Tuscany Regional Authority – Regione Toscana – has announced the publication of the tender for the construction of the new emergency and urgent care department of the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital, one of the most important healthcare construction projects in the region.
The design of the project was developed by HYDEA, in a temporary grouping with L+Partners, Steel Project Engineering, Beta Progetti, and the Engineer Francesco Gianola. The team supported the project’s evolution by adapting it to the new needs of the healthcare system, developing the entire design through an integrated digital approach based on the BIM methodology.
The new complex, with a total surface area of approximately 13,000 square meters, will be arranged over four floors, one of which will be underground, and will be directly connected to the existing “Padiglione Vespucci” building.
The basement level will house the MRI unit, as well as changing rooms, storage areas, and technical rooms. The ground floor will accommodate the Emergency Department, Short-Stay Observation Unit, High Dependency Unit (HDU), diagnostic imaging and medical offices, as well as management and coordination offices.
The critical care area will occupy the first floor. It will include the intensive care unit and sub-intensive care unit, the cardiology sub-intensive care ward, complex surgical inpatient wards, interventional radiology, and an operating suite with three operating rooms, one of which will be hybrid.
The second floor will house and conceal the technological systems.
Three funding phases are planned, with a total investment of over 51 million euros. Construction is scheduled to begin by 2026, with the goal of completing the project in 2029.
