Palazzo Pio IX

SENIGALLIA (AN) | ITALY

Final design.

Palazzo Pio IX in Senigallia is a fine example of nineteenth-century architecture, originally constructed as a private residence in the first half of the 1800s and later converted into a college at the behest of Pope Pius IX, a native of the city.
The redevelopment project aims to breathe new life into the building, preserving its identity while adapting it to meet contemporary needs. The spaces will be repurposed to provide social housing for elderly residents, whilst a portion of the complex will be designated as a Civic Centre to benefit the local community organisations. The planned interventions are diverse and comprehensive. Key measures include enhancing energy performance through the replacement of outdated windows and insulation of the roof, as well as improving accessibility by installing a lift to eliminate architectural barriers. Seismic upgrading is
also planned, involving targeted structural works and a reorganisation of the internal layout. Specifically, on the second floor, existing partition walls will be demolished and rebuilt in plasterboard to ensure adequate safety standards. Further works include the restoration of the internal façades, rationalisation of secondary volumes (such as the boiler room and service areas), refurbishment of the mechanical and electrical systems, and renewal of internal finishes. In certain areas, new linoleum flooring will be laid over the existing surfaces, respecting the building’s historic character.
This intervention seeks to harmonise conservation, functionality, and social inclusion, restoring Palazzo Pio IX as a focal point in the life of the community.
