Redevelopment, functional upgrading, and seismic improvement of the Messina transportation hub
MESSINA | ITALY
Concept, detailed, and final design, and ancillary services.
The Messina hubs serve as gateways to Sicily, accommodating both train-to-ship interchange lines and passengers transiting from the mainland. The quays facing the Maritime Station host both Blujet fast ferries and Bluferries rail ships.
Design interventions at the Central and Maritime Stations focus on enhancing accessibility and reorganizing internal spaces. These upgrades include the integration of tactile paving for the visually impaired, the removal of architectural barriers, and a stronger connection between the stations and their surrounding urban environment.
The project also includes improvements to building systems’ efficiency and the restoration of the historic station designed by Angiolo Mazzoni in 1939. The overall scope includes seismic retrofitting, functional upgrades, and structural interventions across both the Central and Maritime Stations, with specific attention to:
- The passenger building of the Central Station
- The ‘Mazzoni’ hall
- The Maritime Station passenger terminal
- The canopy of the Central Station
- Various other station facilities.
New electrical and mechanical systems will be installed, along with a new drainage system to address longstanding water-related deterioration.
