Hydraulic Flood Protection for the City of Florence

FLORENCE | ITALY

Final design for the arrangement of the existing flood protection works along the Arno River, from Nave a Rovezzano to Ponte Santa Trinita.

The project aims to carry out works to reduce the hydraulic risk of the River Arno in the historic centre of Florence.
The intervention involves flood defence measures along both the left and right banks of the river, covering a 4 km stretch from Nave a Rovezzano to Ponte Santa Trinita. The objective is to protect the built-up area from flooding events with a return period of up to 200 years.
The planned works fall into three main categories:

  • Permanent works (new reinforced concrete walls and/or embankments constructed from loose material);
  • Operable fixed works (mainly bulkheads to close structural gaps);
  • Temporary works (to be installed in the event of a flood alert, such as wall extensions or sandbag barriers).

The final design was prepared by the design team appointed by Varvarito S.p.A., the contractor responsible for delivering the integrated contract works. The design was developed in accordance with the guidance and requirements that emerged during the Services Conference.
The works are located within the stretch of the River Arno that passes through the historic centre of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, specifically between Ponte San Niccolò and Ponte alla Vittoria.
