Consolidation of the bridge piers over the Albegna River at km 157+437 of the Pisa–Rome railway line
ALBINIA (GR) | ITALY
Final design of the foundation protection and reinforcement works for piers 10 and 11 of the railway viaduct over the Albegna River.
The viaduct comprises fifteen spans, featuring a reinforced concrete deck supported by reinforced concrete piers and abutments. Both the geometry and span lengths vary along the structure.
In recent years, recurring floods of the Albegna River—combined with the riverbed’s distinctive configuration, which includes a bend directly beneath the bridge—have caused severe bank erosion on the hydraulic right side. This has resulted in significant damage to the foundations of piers 9, 10–11, and 12.
Following the 2012 floods, initial protection work was carried out on piers 12 and 13, involving the placement of large stone blocks driven more than 5 meters deep into the ground. A similar technique was used to reinforce the riverbank, forming an artificial stone block facing.
The intervention authorised by the Genio Civile (Italian Civil Engineering Authority) under Royal Decree 523/06 provides for the consolidation of all piers and abutments of the viaduct to ensure structural safety:
- against potential erosion affecting the right-bank piers (9, 10–11, 12), which has already occurred to some extent, particularly at pier 10–11;
- and against subsidence that has occurred or is ongoing at piers 12, 13, and 14 on the northern side.
