System of Expansion Basins Aimed at Mitigating Hydraulic Risk in the Valdarno Fiorentino

As part of the Regional System for Mitigating Hydraulic Risk in the Valdarno Fiorentino area, the flood expansion basins aim to reduce the impact of flood events along the River Arno, with a focus on safeguarding Florence at both local and basin levels. The Extraordinary Commissioner appointed HYDEA, as lead firm of the temporary joint venture, to design and supervise construction of several key works in the system’s First Implementation Phase. The designed works include: 1. The flood expansion basin on the right hydraulic bank of the River Arno, known as Pizziconi; 2. Hydraulic upgrading of the Resco stream; 3. Embankment improvements on the right hydraulic bank of the River Arno, between the mouth of the Faella stream and the SR 69 bridge; 4. The flood expansion basin on the
left hydraulic bank of the River Arno, known as Restone; 5. Hydraulic upgrading of the Cesto stream; 6. Embankment improvements on the left hydraulic bank of the River Arno, between the Cesto and Ponterosso streams; 7. Reinforcement of the right bank of the Ponterosso stream; 8. Construction of three crown embankments to protect the built-up area of Matassino.
The works were grouped into several functional lots. The design phase was supported by a detailed hydraulic study of the River Arno, developed using a numerical model at both territorial and local scales, including its principal right-bank tributaries.Key engineering challenges were addressed during both the design and supervision phases, such as the construction of a floodwater intake structure beneath the A1 Milan–Naples motorway, which was completed while ensuring
uninterrupted traffic flow.
