2001 Convention Periodic Voluntary Report on the Underwater heritage

KINGDOM OF SAUDI AURABIA

The project aims to prepare the Periodic Voluntary Report for UNESCO on the implementation of the 2001 Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Among the services required by the Ministry of Culture and the World Heritage Department are the enhancement of national reporting on underwater cultural heritage and the development of a documentation and reporting system for the Heritage Commission and UNESCO.
The project methodology is structured around four key activities: conducting a situation analysis, establishing the reporting framework, drafting the inaugural national report, and formulating a roadmap to enhance future implementation. Each activity involves specific steps, including literature reviews, field surveys, consultations, and report drafting. The project prioritizes the integration of underwater heritage into the wider contexts of cultural and natural heritage, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 11.4. Additionally, it seeks to strengthen compliance with the 2001 Convention through a comprehensive assessment and the creation of a detailed roadmap specifically for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
