Refurbishment, adaptive reuse, and accessibility improvement of Olbia train station
OLBIA (SS) | ITALIA
Detailed design.
Olbia Station, inaugurated in the late 19th century as part of the railway line linking Cagliari to the ports of Gallura, is a historic and strategic hub within Sardinia’s rail network. Situated in the heart of the old town, it lies along the Sassari–Golfo Aranci through line and features six tracks: three dedicated to passenger services and three used occasionally for rolling stock stabling.
The refurbishment project involves the passenger building, the station forecourt, and several ancillary structures on the western side. A new pedestrian and cycle underpass will replace the existing level crossing, providing safe access to the platforms and the San Simplicio area, while also strengthening the city’s east–west connection, which is currently limited to the level crossing on Via Umberto I.
Plans for the pedestrianisation of the forecourt include the creation of new public spaces, notably the transformation of the RFI-owned garden into a green area open to the community. Car parking will be relocated to nearby municipal facilities, offering short-term free parking and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility.
The project also includes major maintenance works and the adaptive reuse of the main station building’s interior spaces, aimed at improving accessibility and passenger services. In addition, the adjacent former Telephone Exchange will be converted into a public café, further opening the station to the city and enhancing its integration into urban life.
