<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/i><\/div><\/i><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>This two-year project focused on the documentation, conservation and adaptive re-use of vernacular built heritage to address severe conflict damage in As-Samou’.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>Located in the southernmost part of the West Bank, the ancient city of As-Samou’<\/strong> is richly embellished with cultural heritage<\/strong>. A Roman temple, the remains of the city walls, a historic tower and an ancient synagogue are among the most important heritage assets of the city.
\nIn addition to these archaeological assets, As-Samou’ is host to vernacular heritage in the form of a large number of built ensembles or compounds called ahwash<\/em>,\u00a0that demonstrate the local architectural style, a mix of “historic” construction materials and techniques<\/strong>.
\nThe project proposal submitted by HYDEA and partners, the Municipality of As Samou\u2019 and HCE Habash Consulting Engineers, was endorsed by the British Council<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>within the framework of the\u00a0Cultural Protection Fund<\/a><\/strong> a \u00a330 million operation, supporting efforts to keep cultural heritage sites and objects safe<\/strong>, as well as the documentation, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.
\nIn the two-year implementation, young apprentices have been trained in cultural heritage conservation and management of the sites.
\nThe project included the identification, documentation and assessment of buildings in the ahwash<\/em>, with a view to simple excavations, if valuable remains are discovered.
\nA pilot restoration project has been run at hosh<\/em> Al-Aqeeli which will provide training for 20 apprentices and labourers, with a focus on involving underemployed or unemployed engineers, architects and craftsmen. In addition to this, a new cultural youth centre<\/strong> will be established, and educational activities will be brought to the local community.
\nAs the final phase, the project envisaged the preparation of a communication and dissemination<\/strong> plan targeted to all its stakeholders. For this purpose, HYDEA developed the website ahwash.ps<\/a><\/strong> in close collaboration with the local community, in order to explain the project and tell its story.<\/p>\n
