Quito Historic Centre Revitalization Programme

QUITO | ECUADOR

Preparation of the 2nd phase of the Revitalization Program for the historic centre of Quito in view of further funding by the Government and the Inter-American Development Bank.

The historic centre of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is a unique architectural ensemble and for this reason -since 1978- the city is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Quito was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city at an altitude of 2,850 m. Despite the 1917 earthquake, the city has the best-preserved, least altered historic centre in Latin America. For example, Quito houses old monasteries and churches that are pure examples of the ‘Baroque school of Quito’, which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art.
The preparatory study was geared towards quickly identifying the most appropriate actions to be taken in order to revitalize the city’s historic centre, while enhancing at the same time its economic and social development. To this end, advise was provided to Empresa del Centro Histórico de Quito (ECH) and a project focused on the rehabilitation of the historic centre and capacity building with the ECH was prepared, to be implemented under a new lending operation funded by the IADB.
