Cultural Heritage Preservation & Tourism
Sector Support Project (PAST)

CAP HAÏTIEN | HAITI

HYDEA was hired by the Ministry of Economy and Finance to provide the Executing Agency (UTE) with technical assistance for the implementation of the project, in particular the conservation and rehabilitation of the major historic buildings and sites, such as the Citadelle Henry, and the Sans Souci palace and chapel. Assistance was also provided for the urban upgrading of the Cap-Haïtien historic city centre.

Alongside Cuba, Haiti was the most sought-after tourism destination in the Caribbean in the mid 20th century, and it was known as the “Pearl of the Antilles”. Today, with a GDP per capita of US$771 (2012), and the unenviable label of “poorest country in the Americas”, the nation is still recovering from the devastating earthquake of January 2010 and striving to develop new sources of growth for its economy. Although developing tourism in Haiti is challenging, the Country captures the imagination of many and interest in travelling to Haiti is growing.
